What is preventative healthcare?

Preventative healthcare is taking proactive measures throughout the life of a pet in order to prevent disease and promote well-being. There are many aspects of a pet’s life that we can take into consideration when evaluating their overall health.

Why is it important?

Our aim is to improve the quality of life and longevity of our companions. Early detection and prevention of disease can save lives and avoid costly emergencies. Regular testing can also identify trends before results are considered highly abnormal.

Preventative Care Testing

From 2023 we are able to offer heavily discounted health screens to all of our “healthy” pets. Teaming up with our laboratory provider Idexx, we can run screens on blood, urine and faeces with 40% discount. Idexx research has show that 1 in 7 healthy adults had significant abnormalities on routine health screen, and this increased to 2 in 5 geriatric animals.

Preventative care testing is available for all pets coming in for their annual vaccinations, for a routine Pet Health Plan check-up, or for a routine geriatric screen who are clinically well at home. All you need to do is bring in a stool sample and we do the rest – please collect a pot from reception. If you are concerned about your pet being too stressed for bloods sampling, just let us know as there are a variety of safe, calming medications. that can be giving prior to sampling.

We also have a range of Pet Health Plans to save you money, provide additional benefits and spread the cost of these treatments throughout the year.

Our nurse clinics are an excellent way to discuss preventative healthcare such as travel advice, dental care, parasite control and diet. Click here to see the full range of services offered via our nurse clinics.

Vaccinations

Following the global pandemic in 2020, we are all far more aware of vaccination programmes and their importance in preventing disease. We follow vaccination guidelines produced by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, which list both core (recommended) and non-core (optional) vaccines for cats, dogs and rabbits.

We are incredibly fortunate in Jersey that the majority of our canine and feline populations are vaccinated, and this means it is rare for us to see some of the diseases associated with core vaccines. We can discuss an appropriate vaccination schedule tailored to each individual patient.
