Here’s What You Need to Know About Travelling with Pets

(EU Travel Update 2025)

Planning a trip away and thinking about taking your four-legged family member with you? Whether it’s a road trip through France or a longer European adventure, travelling with pets is still very achievable – but the rules have changed in recent years, so preparation is key.

At All Pets, we help guide clients through the paperwork, vaccinations, and certification needed to make travel safe, compliant, and stress-free for both pets and their owners.

Understanding the Current Pet Travel Rules

The UK (including Jersey) is no longer part of the EU Pet Passport scheme, which means:

  • UK/Jersey vets cannot issue new EU pet passports
  • Existing EU passports can only be updated within the EU
  • For most pets travelling from Jersey/UK to the EU, an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) is required

An Animal Health Certificate must be issued within 10 days before travel, and once issued it allows:

  • Entry into the EU within those 10 days
  • Onward travel within the EU
  • Return to Jersey/UK within four months

Each AHC is valid for a single trip, so a new certificate is required for each journey unless your pet holds a valid EU-issued passport completed by an EU veterinarian.

What Your Pet Needs Before Travel

Before we can issue an Animal Health Certificate, your pet must have:

1. A working microchip
Your pet must be microchipped before or at the same time as their rabies vaccination.

2. A valid rabies vaccination

  • Pets must be at least 12 weeks old to receive the rabies vaccine
  • The vaccine becomes valid 21 days after the first vaccination
  • Booster vaccines remain valid if given before expiry
  • Rabies vaccinations can now be given at the same time as annual vaccinations, just ask us for more informatio

If this is your pet’s first rabies vaccination, we recommend contacting us at least one month before travel to allow time for everything to be completed.

3. An Animal Health Certificate appointment

The AHC appointment should be booked around 5 days before travel, giving flexibility if travel dates change. During the appointment:

  • Your pet’s microchip will be scanned
  • A travel health check will be performed
  • Rabies vaccination records will be verified
  • The certificate will be prepared for collection (usually ready within 1–2 days)

The person attending the appointment (with your pet) must be the person travelling with the pet, ideally the registered owner. You also need to bring the address of where you’re staying in Europe and your pet’s vaccination card with the rabies vaccine in.

4. Tapeworm treatment (dogs only)
Dogs returning to Jersey/UK must receive a vet-administered tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before re-entry, recorded in the travel documentation.
