Ultrasonography is an essential, non-painful tool to help diagnose abnormalities within the organs of the abdomen and to diagnose heart disease. More excitingly it can be used to diagnose pregnancy! We always try to perform an ultrasound examination with the patient conscious, but sometimes a light level of sedation is needed to keep our excited patients calm. To ensure a good image, the fur overlying the area to be scanned will need to be clipped to allow good contact with the skin.
If your pet is booked in for an ultrasound scan, please make sure they are fasted prior to the exam so the stomach is empty.
